Govt proposes restructuring INC in response to cement deficit (Paraguay)
15-04-2011

Paraguay's state-owned cement producer INC is not capable of meeting the high cement demand brought about by the country's economic growth, according to civil cabinet head Miguel López.

The government has proposed restructuring the company to address country's current cement deficit, the presidential website reported.

"We need to think about solutions which target the bottom of this crisis, of a more corporate scheme with higher production levels [...] and I think [we need to make] a radical change in the cement company, if we want to save such a strategic industry," added López.

Former INC president Optaciano Gómez was relieved of his duties on Thursday (Apr 14) following criticism from the construction sector, cement distributors and workers' unions over the ongoing cement shortage. The government has yet to name a successor, López said.

Paraguay has been suffering cement shortages for years due to low production of Portland cement by INC, leading some construction companies to import cement from Uruguay and Spain.
