MOP to invest US$60mn/y in Chiloé plan (Chile)
08-04-2011
Chile's public works ministry MOP is planning to invest some US$60mn a year through 2014 in the Chiloé island development plan, MOP's region X director Enrique Hoelck told BNamericas.

A proposal to concession highway projects under the plan was rejected by the association of municipalities on the island. That led the ministry, with input from local communities and officials, to re-prioritize projects based on public investment.

This year, MOP plans to tender several highway projects including road works in Ancud city and Lemuy island, Hoelck said.

"The important thing is that the plan that was presented to the community is being strictly adhered to, and that in the end amounts to some US$60mn per year," Hoelck said.

"After 2014, there'll be about US$300mn in additional projects left to carry out," the official added.

The Chiloé plan started off with a portfolio of 75 projects and an estimated investment of US$300mn. The addition of more projects in 2006 brought the total number up to 125 and investment to US$400mn, covering highways, ports, airports and rural potable water networks.

The plan was originally scheduled for completion in 2010.
