MTT sanctions AFT over payment card failure (Chile)
05-04-2011

Chile's transport and communications ministry (MTT) has issued a 1.7bn-peso (US$3.58mn) fine to AFT, the financial operator of capital Santiago's public transport system Transantiago, following the mass failure of payment card Bip earlier this year.

AFT's Bip validator machines failed to recognize credit on roughly 50,000 payment cards in early March, which meant users were unable to use credit they had bought to use on the transport network.

"We are interested in ensuring this doesn't happen again. It's unacceptable that a company fail to fulfill its obligations, causing problems for users. This cannot happen again," transport minister Pedro Errázuriz was quoted as saying by local news source Emol.

The company can still appeal the ruling.

AFT is made up of banks BCI, Banco Estado and Banco de Chile, Spanish bank Santander and Chilean retailer Falabella.

MTT also applied sanctions against AFT in March after finding irregularities in the administrator's concession contracts.
