Metro to reduce energy consumption by 5% (Chile)
04-04-2011
Chile's state-owned Metro firm, which operates capital Santiago's subway system, has implemented an energy efficiency plan that aims to reduce energy consumption by 5%, according to Metro's board chairman Raphael Bergoeing.

"As part of its ongoing sustainable development policy, Metro has implemented several initiatives in recent years. This year, we will make an effort to reduce energy consumption [...] to cut costs by an amount equivalent to 11,350 households' average energy expense," Bergoeing said.

The program began in March this year and aims to cut energy via automatic control of lighting in the company's stations, stores and other buildings, and by decreasing voltage by 20kV.

The company has installed green technology both inside and outside its stations, which has reduced consumption by roughly 73%, according to a Metro release.

"During last year alone, Metro withdrew 1040 custom Transantiago buses which contaminated 15 times more than buses with filters. Currently 35% of buses (2,054 buses) have filters," added transport and telecommunications minister Pedro Errázuriz.

Presently, 18% of Metro's electric consumption at its stations corresponds to lighting.
