Ministry to modernize May Pen-Linstead rail line (Jamaica)
2011-04-01

Jamaica's transport and public works ministry is planning a test run for the railway between May Pen in Clarendon parish and Linstead in St Catherine parish on April 16, according to minister Mike Henry.

The run will test coaches and rebuilt engines on the existing rail line, state news service JIS reported.

The government has yet to reach a deal with prospective investors concerning its plan to modernize the system. At least four investors from the US, Canada and the UK are in talks for the project, Henry said.

The line will not compete with other modes of transportation, but will rather support and enhance Jamaica's public transport, the minister added.
