Chile's public works ministry (MOP) plans to include designs for the Nicolasa bridge in northern region III town Freirina in its 2012 budget, according to regional MOP director Ximena Peñaloza.
Peñaloza made the announcement following an inspection tour of town's bridges, many of which need to be replaced or repaired due to growth in vehicle size and traffic volume, the regional MOP office said in a release.
The MOP director met with mayor Roberto Bruzzone to discuss infrastructure needs and investments in the city.
The ministry spent some 9bn pesos (US$19mn) in the Freirina bypass, which was opened in January and is also investing 2bn pesos to carry out repairs, paving and maintenance on the 46km Ruta C-46 highway.
MOP's waterworks division will also clean up the city's river, which requires maintenance works to prevent flooding, Peñaloza said.
