New Limon container terminal to cost US$992mn - APM (Costa Rica)
Construction of a new container terminal in Costa Rica's eastern Limon province will cost upwards of US$992mn, APM Terminals' director of Central and South American investments, Paul Gallie, told BNamericas.

The Dutch firm was the only bidder in the tender, which should be awarded in the next couple of weeks.

"The reference price in the RFP was US$950mn, but in our offer we have US$992mn so that is now the official cost," Gallie said.

"It's not official, but we understand there will be a meeting in San Jose on Monday with [Atlantic port authority] Japdeva and the national concessions council in which they will hopefully make their formal recommendation to President Chinchilla to award APM terminals the concession," the executive added.

The new terminal is part of the government's plan to modernize the Limon-Moin port facilities, which currently rank "a shameful 128th" in international port services, according to a government release.

Many feared that the plans, which include concessioning the two existing terminals, would be jeopardized following the reelection of Japdeva union president Ronaldo Blear on January 21. Blear has expressed opposition to privatizing the existing ports.

However, the result of the vote should not affect the new terminal concession, Gallie said, adding that Blear has said publically he is not against concessioning the new port. The government has said it will continue with its port modernization plan "with or without" the union's support, according to local press.

APM Terminals operates 50 container facilities in 34 countries.
