A tender to build the US$13mn Corinto-Lislique-Anamoros stretch of El Salvador's Longitudinal del Norte highway has been awarded to local construction group Terrasal-Salazar Romero.
The 16km highway section, connecting several areas of La Union department, will be completed by May 2012, local news source La Prensa Grafica reported.
The Longitudinal del Norte project involves 194km of highway connecting northern El Salvador to the rest of the country.
The US$248mn project is being funded by the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), which gave El Salvador a donation of US$461mn in 2006 to reduce poverty in the north of the country.
MCC is a US government agency that provides aid to developing countries.
