Montes del Plata to sign port construction contract in February (Uruguay)
2011-01-19
Uruguayan firm Montes del Plata will sign a contract for the construction of a port as part of a US$1.9bn pulp mill project in February, an official from the firm's communications division told BNamericas.

The firm is currently in talks with construction firms that are interested in building the port, said the official, who was unable to provide the names of the firms involved or a more detailed schedule for the port project.

The Montes del Plata pulp mill will be located in Colonia department's Punta Pereira district.

The port will include a dock to handle wood-transporting vessels, another to handle maritime ships; a bulk cargo terminal to handle chemicals and a 700m waterway access to the Martin Garcia canal.

Other works will include building roads to access Montes del Plata and its port; the construction of office and storage facilities in the port terminal and a container storage area.

The terminal will initially have a depth of 10m and should be expanded to 14m at a later stage, said the official.

The overall project's construction was announced by the company on January 18 and will take an estimated 27 months to complete, the official said.

Montes del Plata is a JV between Chile's Celulosa Arauco, a division of fuel distributor Copec, and Finland's Stora Enso.
