ANTT planning new highway concession model (Brazil)
2011-01-19
Brazil's national ground transport agency ANTT is planning a new highway concession model whereby concessionaires will receive regular government payments for road maintenance rather than charging users tolls.

The move aims to fund maintenance on roads with low traffic flow, where charging tolls would be impractical for road users, news service Agencia Estado reported.

The new model will take at least six months to develop, as this is the minimum time required to carry out traffic studies, according to ANTT director Bernardo Figueiredo.

Tenders under the new model are unlikely to be launched before July, as the issue has yet to reach the hands of President Dilma Rousseff, Figueiredo said.
