Ecuador's transport and public works ministry (MTOP) has completed repairs and modifications worth a total US$26mn to the runway at Ulpiano Paez de Salinas airport in Santa Elena province.
The new 2.5km runway will enable large aircraft, including those belonging to the Ecuadorian air force, to land at the airport.
Work is still underway on the airport's new passenger terminal, control tower and runway lighting system, which will likely be completed in the next few months, government news agency El Ciudadano reported.
Works are being carried out by construction firm Verdu.
The improvements will allow Ulpiano Paez de Salinas to become recognized as an international airport, according to the report.
