Lima train works to continue - Garcia (Peru)
2010-12-14
Peruvian President Alan Garcia has dismissed rumors of plans to halt works on capital Lima's Tren Electrico light rail system following observations from the comptroller general on structural flaws in the project, the presidential website reported.

After carrying out an inspection prior to the comptroller's observations, the consortium in charge of the project decided to strengthen 13 pillars that were first built 20 years ago, Garcia said.

The first phase of line 1 is being built by a consortium comprised of Brazil's Odebrecht and Peru's Graña y Montero at a cost of around US$410mn, BNamericas reported previously.

Latin American development bank CAF provided a US$300mn loan to fund the works.
