Canadian miner Kinross Gold (TSX: K, NYSE: KGC) is in talks with Ecuador's Bolivar port authority APPB about the construction of a new port, APPB general manager Wilmer Encalada told BNamericas.
The port would handle gold mined by Kinross Gold's Aurelian subsidiary, which is developing the Fruta del Norte project in eastern Ecuador, Encalada said.
The facility is to be built some 1.5km from the existing Bolivar port terminal, and would be connected to eastern Ecuador via a railway to be built by a Chinese stakeholder in Kinross Gold, said Encalada.
Work includes the construction of a conveyor to transport the minerals and reduce environmental impact, Encalada added.
APPB has jurisdiction over the Bolivar coastal area, so the mining firm must negotiate with the authority to build the terminal, he added.
