Mejillones port invests US$32mn in upgrades during 2010 (Chile)
Puerto de Mejillones, the operator of northern Chile's region II Mejillones bulk cargo port terminal, has invested some US$32mn in improvements since January, the firm said in a release.


The bulk of the investment, some US$30mn, has been invested in construction of five new storage bays, which will double capacity from 100,000t to 200,000t when completed.


The storage facilities are about 74% complete and are scheduled to be opened in 1Q11, the release said.


Other work includes a new loading dock for trucks, which will increase transfer of sulfuric acid up to 4Mt/y and security at the port entrance has been improved.
