Swiss construction materials company Holcim reported net sales of 862mn Swiss francs (US$884mn) in Latin America for Q3, up 1.1% from the prior-year period.
Sales were helped by the large volume of construction work in Brazil and Argentina, although the Mexican and Central American markets struggled, the company said in its quarterly results report.
Mexican subsidiary Holcim Apasco sold less cement in Q3 than in the same quarter last year, with construction affected by weak economic activity and adverse weather.
Operating profit for the region came in at 189mn Swiss francs, down 16.7% from the 227mn Swiss francs reported in 3Q09. Operating Ebitda in Latin America fell 13.1% to 239mn Swiss francs.
Holcim's overall consolidated net income for the quarter dropped 19.2% year-on-year to 544mn Swiss francs.
