Colombia's government has yet to concession 11,288km of highways, ruling Unidad Nacional party senator Piedad Zuccardi said during a committee debate in congress.
In 18 years, the country has concessioned 5,287km of highway, according to a congressional release.
Zuccardi proposes structuring concession contracts for the remaining highways to make them more accessible to local firms. The senator also warned against ruling out concessions because of bad experiences, saying that each should be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
The country must incorporate private funding in infrastructure investments to close its development gap, according to Zuccardi, who suggested promoting investment through private pension funds.
