Minister inspects Pilcomayo river works (Argentina-Paraguay)
2010-09-28
Paraguay's public works minister (MOPC) Efrain Alegre has carried out an inspection of a canal being built to divert water from the binational Pilcomayo river to Formosa in Argentina.

The 800m canal is a violation of Paraguayan sovereignty and could harm national interests by decreasing the amount of water on the Paraguayan side, MOPC said in a release.

Agreements signed by both Argentina and Paraguay state that the river's water must be divided equally between the two countries.

During the visit, Alegre called on Paraguay's armed forces to protect the zone and ensure that no illegal action is being taken to divert the river.

A binational group is expected to meet to discuss the canal on September 30, according to Paraguay's presidential website.
