FCC to start construction of new Longitudinal del Norte stretch in October (El Salvador)
The Central American unit of Spain's FCC is scheduled to start building stretch 3A of El Salvador's Longitudinal del Norte highway in October, an official from Fomilenio, the El Salvadorian chapter of the US Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) told BNamericas.

Work involves building a 10.7km highway, the tender for which was awarded to FCC Construccion de Centroamerica in July. Construction work is due to cost US$19.5mn.

The stretch will be built in Chalatenango department, whose capital of the same name is one of the most important cities in northern El Salvador.

"The firm began to design the highway stretch this month. However, construction work is scheduled to begin in October," the official said.

The Longitudinal del Norte highway is scheduled to be completed by September 2012. The project involves 178km of highway connecting northern El Salvador to the rest of the country. The overall initiative was set to cost some US$234mn, which was donated by MCC.

In June 2006, MCC gave El Salvador a donation of US$461mn to reduce poverty in the north of the country, which included the highway budget.

MCC is a US government agency that provides aid to developing countries.
