Autopista do Pacifico to implement free-flow system in mid 2011 (Chile)
The concessionaire of the access road to Chilean capital Santiago's Arturo Merino Benitez international airport, Autopista do Pacifico, will implement a free flow system in mid-2011, an official from the public works ministry's (MOP) concessions division told BNamericas.

The concessionaire plans on investing over US$8.4mn in the expansion and improvement of the existing road to access the airport, and works will involve eliminating the toll booths so tolls can be charged using the electronic device known as TAG, which is already used on Santiago's urban expressways, said the official.

The firm expects to remove the toll booths in June, but these plans could suffer a change of date depending on when the project is finally approved by national environmental authority Conama, the official said.

For the past few years, MOP has been discussing with concessionaires the need to eliminate toll booths and replace them with overhead gantries that read TAGs on all of Chile's concessioned highways, to improve transit conditions especially during times of high demand.
